Smart Clothes Shopping Tips // Autumn Style

Over and over again I find myself wearing this outfit this autumn season. What can I say, I love my infinity scarf, and I love my brown cardigan with it, along with how the fold-over cross-body purse ties it all together.

If you invest in one thing for your cold-season wardrobe this year, invest in a nice chunky infinity scarf that matches a lot of things. You’ll wear it a lot. :-)

Are you like me? You have maybe 7 pieces in your closet that sums up basically all you really wear for weeks on end? I’m not sure if it’s a good thing as it wears out those pieces quickly, but it makes me feel simple and easy to please. The truth is, I struggle to buy things I’m often in the mood to wear.

I’ll buy very expensive pieces of clothing that I wear once or twice and other pieces of clothing that I wear so much it seems their value was paid off long ago. My goal is to learn how to shop smart. For years on end, it seemed like every piece in my closet was a patterned shirt or a statement piece. Over time I’ve learned the value of investing in nice simple shirts too. It’s good to have a few statement pieces, but simple pieces of clothing are important to compliment and contrast. And, purchasing simple pieces that cost the same amount as a statement pieces are worth it, because they are timeless and you’ll probably be in the mood to wear it more than that baby doll top shirt in floral pattern.

I’ve also learned to stop trying to diversify my closet with a variety of color and rather buy what I’m usually in the mood to wear- for me that’s black, white, grey, brown, and blue- natural and neutral colors.

So what have I learned?

Write down what you need.

Don’t wait till you see something you love- write down what you need when you’re pulling all your clothes off the hanger searching for the right outfit. What’s missing to make it just right? Once you have it written down, go look for it when your out rather than being tempted to buy another black shirt that’s slightly different from the other ones in your closet and spending too much money, again.

Invest in simple & timeless pieces.

Ask yourself: “Is this just trending right now?” If it’s going to last you a while and it’s a general item you will probably wear a lot- spend the money. Don’t settle for something less.

Invest in the details.

A dainty necklace can go a long way. I used to think that jewelry shouldn’t be invested in like a shirt or a pair of jeans, but that little touch can really make a difference. I’m not saying it has to be expensive, but buy a few pieces that compliment your simple pieces of clothing.

Buy your jeans a little tighter than you want them.

For years, I justified buying loser pants with the hope of them shrinking in the dryer. But, I ended up with frumpy pants and a saggy butt (well it appeared that way). If you wear them enough, they will stretch out. So, buy them a little tighter than you want (but not where they are suffocating you!). Beware if they are extremely stretchy this method will likely not work. But either way, wash your jeans as seldom as you need and don’t dry them. It makes them fade and wear much faster.

Don’t just buy it cause it’s on sale.

How often do I justify buying something because it’s on sale. Sometimes sales can be a catch, but other times it’s worth buying exactly what you want for the full price rather than settling for something that most people weren’t as interested in, and, therefore made it’s way to the sale rack. But, still take a look- you might find a gem.

It’s okay to not buy something when you go to the store.

For some reason, I’ve learned that if I am going to make the effort to go to the store, I need to find something. And, if it says anything, my husband reminds me everytime we go to the store that it’s okay not to find anything. So, I’m learning. You never would have thought, but it’s actually possible. There is something better for you out there- save your money for good finds rather than just a find.

Love what you have.

You already have it, paid for it, and it’s in your closet. Why not find some new life in it? Sometimes it just takes a few hours of trying on all your clothes again and putting different things together, but at one point you were in love with everything you had when you brought it home from the store. Try to picture it the same again. Just because you’ve become familiar with it doesn’t mean it’s not still a great piece of clothing with a lot of potential.

Best to your shopping (and rejuvenating the potential your closet already holds!)

Xx
